Requesting an I-20 or DS-2019

To get an F-1 I-20 or J-1 DS-2019 from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, you must be first admitted to a program of study.

Within one week of admission, you will receive an emailed invitation to the iVols Portal for international students.

In the iVols Portal, submit scanned copies of the following documents to request an I-20 or DS-2019:

  1. Passport

  2. Proof of funding (e.g. scholarship letter, assistantship letter, financial guarantee, or personal funds)

If you are currently in F-1 or J-1 status at another institution, please be sure to have your SEVIS Record transferred to UTK within your grace period (60-days for F-1 students/ 30-days for J-1 students).  You will need to provide the DSO/ARO at your current school with a copy of your admission letter and request that they transfer your record to The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, F-1 School Code: NOL214F10519000; J-1 EV Program Number: P-1-00378.

Electronic I-20s and Mailed DS-2019 Forms

All I-20s will be sent as an electronic document. An electronic form I-20 is considered an original, signed document as per the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) Policy Guidance, 'Use of Electronic Signatures and Transmission for the Form I-20,' issued on October 21, 2021. This guidance is available  https://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/I20-guidance.pdf.  If you need a physical copy of the document for a non-U.S. governmental office or international organization, please contact us with the request.

For J-1 students, the original, physical DS-2019 is required for visa applications and entry to the U.S.  Admissions letters and DS-2019s will be shipped by FedEx using the address that you provided in your iVols Portal.
