I-20/DS-2019
F-1 and J-1 Students/Scholars should note the program end date on the I-20/DS-2019. The program end date is the expected completion date of the program of study. This date is estimated at the start of the program and may be updated to an earlier or later date later in the program based on the student/scholar’s actual progress. If the student/scholar can complete the program of study by the program end date, then they do not need to take any action. ISSS will update the I-20/DS-2019 program end date following graduation.
However, if the student/scholar is not able to complete the program of study by the program end date, then they should request an extension of the I-20 or DS-2019. An I-20 or DS-2019 must be extended before the program end date. If the I-20 or DS-2019 is allowed to expire, the student/scholar should contact an ISSS advisor as soon as possible. An expired I-20/DS-2019 may result in losing F-1 or J-1 status.
Visa/I-94
The visa expiration date is also known as your visa validity, this shows the length of time someone is allowed to travel to a port of entry in the U.S., although this does not guarantee admission into the U.S. Check your I-94 form to locate your “admitted-until date” or “duration of status”.
