Completing the W-9S for Bursar (if you don't have an SSN)
Who needs to complete this form?
All new students at UT will have a hold placed on their account that prevents registration until the Substitute Form W-9s (Request for Student’s Taxpayer Identification Number) is completed.
Why do I have to complete this form?
This form is needed so that the Bursar’s Office can accurately track and report any tax benefits during your time at UT.
How do I complete the form?
You can find the form at https://onestop.utk.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/63/2015/10/student_taxpayer_id.pdf.
Step One:
Determine if you have a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). If you were employed in the U.S. previously, you will likely have an SSN. If you received certain scholarships (like an athletic scholarship), you will likely have an ITIN. If you have an ITIN or an SSN, move on to Completing the W-9S for Bursar (if you don't have an SSN) | Step Two: If you do not, move on to Completing the W-9S for Bursar (if you don't have an SSN) | Step Three: .
Step Two:
If you have an SSN or ITIN, fill in parts I and II of the form below. Your form is now complete. Scan and email the form as an attachment to studentaccounts@utk.edu. If you send the email to the studentaccounts@utk.edu address with the attachment, you will receive a receipt notice. Also, to expedite the hold removal, you may email it to thirdparty@utk.edu as well. Remember, if you do not attach the completed document, your email will be flagged for manual review and the process will be delayed.
Step Three:
If you do not have an SSN or ITIN, fill in parts I and III of the form below. If you do not have a local address in the U.S., you may use your home address from outside the U.S. instead. You will check the first option for part III as indicated in the picture below. Your form is now complete. Scan and email the form as an attachment to studentaccounts@utk.edu. If you send the email to the studentaccounts@utk.edu address with the attachment, you will receive a receipt notice. Remember, if you do not attach the completed document, your email will be flagged for manual review and the process will be delayed.
