Understanding a U.S. phone number
Phone numbers in the U.S. are typically made up of 10 numerical digits. When entering a U.S. phone number, you do NOT add the + symbol on the country code “1.”
See the example below:
(865)-974-3177
This is the phone number to the International Student and Scholar Services. If we were asked to enter this as our phone number, we would do the following. 865 is the area code. We would enter “865” in the area marked for area codes.
974-3177 is the prefix and line number respectively.
We would enter either 9743177 or 974-3177 in the box marked for phone number. Unless you have a business line, most people do not have extension numbers. If you do not have an extension, leave that box blank.
